Home About Orlando

Orlando

Orlando is the fifth largest (by population) city in the state of Florida, and the largest inland city.

orlandoBefore European settlers arrived in 1836, Orlando was sparsely populated by Native American tribes. However, local legends say the name Orlando originated from a soldier named Orlando Reeves who died in 1835 during an attack by Native Americans in the area.

The most critical event for Orlando's economy occurred in 1965 when Walt Disney announced plans to build Walt Disney World. The resort opened in October 1971, prompting an explosive population and economic growth for the Orlando area. Orlando now has more theme parks and entertainment attractions than anywhere else in the world; some estimates quote over 90 entertainment attractions!

golfThe beautiful beaches of Tampa Bay (to the West) and Daytona (to the East) are a 90 minute drive away, and Cape Canaveral Space Centre is a great day out too. The Everglades and Miami are a four hour drive.

For those not into theme parks there are some great walks in forests and parks, and a choice of over 150 golf courses within a 45 minute drive from the villa.

Petrol is cheap in Orlando, on our last visit in July 2011 it cost just 48p per litre, so exploring doesn’t cost the earth!
